Wow – that’s cool! My first thought is totally silly and nostalgic from my childhood, but there’s a reason they showed Sookie watching the Little Princess. I mean, “Naive Girl with a father idolatry complex and an obscure world view has the Life Rug pulled out from under her, is abused and taken advantage of only to eventually be returned to her rightful place in society” sure sounds like a familiar tale to me!!
Plus, just like her dad didn’t actually die in the Boer War and she was told incorrect news about his death, Sookie will learn in Fae what REALLY happened to her parents!
Good point Skarlove, and I am pretty sure we can watch it online. (grandbabies have watched a couple of ST movies online but I’m not sure of this one specifically.)
Just to refresh memories, Tara and Eggs were watching The Screaming Skull in “Release Me”.
~~~
The narrative portion of the film begins as newlyweds Jenni and Eric return to Eric’s palatial country home. Jenni is Eric’s second wife; his first wife Marion died when she hit her head and drowned in a decorative pond on the estate. At the home they meet Eric’s friends, the Reverend and Mrs. Snow, as well as Mickey, the eccentric and patchily-bearded gardener, played by the director, Alex Nicol.
When she begins to hear unexplained screaming noises and see unexplained skulls around her house, Jenni begins to believe the ghost of Marion is haunting her. However, it is also revealed that Jenni has spent time in an asylum, that she has a great personal fortune Eric would inherit if she died, and that Mickey the gardener dislikes Jenni (and, moreover, was childhood friends with Eric’s first wife). Possible explanations of the film’s central mystery seem fourfold:
Is Eric behind the skulls and screams, driving Jenni to suicidal madness to get her money?
Is the screaming skull a “real” ghost?
Is Mickey behind the skulls and screams, driving Jenni away out of a general dislike?
Is it all in Jenni’s unstable mind?
As the haunting continues, the first possibility is proved to be true, as the audience sees Eric planting a skull and then pretending to see nothing when Jenni points out that a skull is present. Eric’s tactics begin to look like they will be effective, as Jenni is increasingly unnerved.
However, in subsequent scenes, it is revealed that the real ghost of Marion, who was murdered by Eric, is out to get him. Aware that his plans are unraveling, Eric prepares a noose and then throttles Jenni with his bare hands. But the ghost of Marion interrupts him, dressed in the clothes of his ex-wife. In the final scenes of the film, Eric is pursued by ghostly screaming skulls into the decorative pond where a skull (presumably of Marion) bites his neck and kills him. Jenni survives her strangulation and is initially traumatized by the experience, but leaves the house soberly in the company of the Reverend and Mrs. Snow.
This movie reference is the main reason I believe Sookie will be the one with amnesia, she will be held prisoner in Bill’s creepy old house, and he will be ‘gaslighting’ her even more than he already has. I’m hoping for the appearance of the vengeful ghost of Caroline!
Stuck home sick for the weekend – perfect time for some R & R in front of an old black and white movie. Too bad I can’t taste the popcorn…(or anything else, haha). I’ll come back with some thoughts once I’ve seen it and can think coherently again!
I am so looking forward to this. Both of you are so much better at catching pop culture refs than me and that is what I love most about reading both of your blogs other than the conspiracies you and AP are great at coming up with.
But both of you should be eternally worshipped for thinking of the Rattrays set-up before anyone else and sticking to your guns on that.
Between you and Renee, I don’t know how I’ll get through all of your posts. And now add movies to the list because I’ve found have a few that were referenced in TB and more that I’m sure that they drew inspiration from. Some will make you go hmm? And other will make you go, I knew it! I knew it! Thank my father who let me watch a lot of surreal films I probably shouldn’t have as a child and the entire Encore channel lineup.
Unfortunately I’ve only found 1 or 2 on youtube. So order netflix or your neighborhood video rental store and use it as an excuse to start a movie night with family old enough to watch. A lot of the films are a hard watch. Some of them are triggers so view warning is advised.
Sunny should I post them here or are you going to start a December section?
Gee Amil, way to tease! Is one of these surrealist films An Andalusian Dog? I’ve been dancing around this one for a while now but having trouble figuring out exactly how it relates to TB.
I have a few current and classic. And thanks I never saw that one but I will now. Some I’m not so sure about. But the first one is actually L’age Dor. I think it relates to someone very well. A repression of sexual desires that led to violence and rage. You would think with all the sexual tension that sex was the objective but it wasn’t, well I guess it channeled it’s energies elsewhere. Like Sookie in her dream thinking that Bill wanted sex. But he said otherwise.
Well with the exception of a French movie about a pair of lesbian maids, I’ve exhausted my knowledge of surrealist films. Can’t remember the title to that one though.
L’Âge d’Or sounds interesting though. Not only is it made by Brunel and Dali like ‘An Andalusian Dog,’ wiki says, “A bishop is thrown out a window, and in the final scene one of the culprits of the 120 days of Sodom is portrayed by an actor dressed in a way that he would be recognized as Jesus.”
Ooh thanks! Trust I won’t let you down. Most I can only list because I wouldn’t post the videos if I could. And I would love for you to two review the movies in relation to TB please. Some aren’t surreal films. Some are just PG-13 popcorn film. I have one with Tara that if you haven’t made the connection, you are going to laugh your head off when you see it. Now that I think of it, that film was probably what I meant when I said I hope Tara goes to FOTS and stirs up trouble.
Ok what I wanted to give Renee is on slight hold haven’t been able to get to it but I do have something to hold your attention before I do. It’s a Sookie/Tara/Bill possibly Jason centric film. Not popcorn or surreal. It’s very triggering. I’m asking for permission before I post it because it includes graphic rape and partial nudity. It’s segmented so that scene can be skipped altogether. This is for S3 doubters. The Accused. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Accused_%281988_film%29
Ok. Sorry the delay. Going to put up the warning first with the trailer so each one can decide for themselves if they want to watch. There are only a few articles on the actual case and they have some additional information (small but TB loves details) that seems to fit into TB as well. I think AB makes sure to put in that grain of salt so *shrugs*.
That’s a hard movie to watch. Jody Foster was excellent in it. I watched it a number of years ago and am reluctant to watch it again. I think because it is based on a true story.
I actually have you and Renee to thank for reminding me of this anime. Of how Claudine shows up when Sookie is in trouble. I have a few more in mind. TB can relate to everything but these I’m sure about. I’m racking my brain trying to remember the names. Like one with a dominatrix and they whip some guy a lot. idk. It’s one 1 (anime) series I think they’ve used but it’s short. Starts off slow (The first few ep. set the foundation) but picks up. Drags some parts out. This is one of the things that make me think that Bill *may* still come out at a good guy.
Sunny, I haven’t put most of related films up because for most of them I can only find clips and trailers. Is it fine if I post those clips/trailers with a summary? They all do get straight to the point.
It’s going to get a tad bit freaky. This is the most recent one and it’s pt.1 answer for your ritual murder question which was a tip dropped on TAP not too long ago. Coincidence or them just messing with us? I think it’s a little bit of both.
Oooh Sunny, I can’t wait for this! What a great idea!
Got any suggestions? I’m looking to discuss works that relate directly to TB, such as Renee listed here:
http://www.ancientpythoness.com/library/
We might start with ‘The Screaming Skull” because it can be viewed online in it’s entirety:
Faaaantastic!
Please leave your comments on the movie here in the October section:
Count me in! I used to adore ‘The Little Princess.’
Cue Anna and her post about Salo, or 120 days of Sodom
http://www.ancientpythoness.com/2010/07/04/not-just-a-pretty-face/
I didn’t realize the more recent movie was based on the work by the Marquis de Sade, but it makes perfect sense.
It’s a 1930′s film. But trust the symbolism is heavy.
Hey Amil, thanks! I’ve made a page for you to place the movies you find interesting.
http://sunnynala.wordpress.com/movie-and-book-club/surrealist-offerings/
You can access it from the front page via drop down menu under “Movie and Book Club”
Oh, and btw if you copy a youtube url and paste it in comments the player automatically shows up!
Are you able to embed google videos. It’s the only one that has the video in one whole segment.
Nope sorry. I can’t even embed Google videos in my posts.
You’re welcome, btw. Don’t worry about them being popcorn films, I love popcorn films!
